Peace Building and Conflict Resolution

As the main objective of HAPEN, we envision to see peaceful society in the horn of Africa which is at peace with its neighbors and communities at peace with each other as well. Since the collapse of the central government in Somalia, there has been an escalation of conflict which has left hundreds of thousands of dead, and others to languish in poverty in the neighbouring countries as refugees. These conflicts had been encouraged by scares resources, poverty clan wars and temporarily unstable administrations. It is when communities are peaceful that you can feed them, provide essentials services to them, and engage in humanitarian activities. This is not possible where there are conflicts, deaths, and devastating environment that Somalia is. The situation has been exacerbated by weak governance and disenfranchisement that has created gaps leading to sprouting and growth of armed non-state actors composed of extremist groups and clan militias.

In response to this, HAPEN conducts the following activities:

  • Consultative forums on peacebuilding and reconciliations
  • Consultative workshops on peace Building
  • Advocacy and awareness on consequences of radicalization and violence; and importance of peace and reconciliation
  • Participatory peace education curriculum development and adoption
  • Promotion of youth to participate in post-conflict peace building and reconciliation through theatres and sporting activities.
  • Strengthening community governance and accountability structures
  • Supporting economic opportunities for youth-at-risk of radicalization.
  • Supporting cross-border peace and reconciliation.
  • Integrating counter violence extremism with an intervention into another programming.
