All of HAPEN’s programmes are founded on the understanding that local people are essentially responsible for their own development and that of their groups and communities and that participatory approaches are the most effective tools in realizing broad-based development. Programmes are open to all with no discrimination on the basis of religion, age, gender, race or tribal affiliation though special attention is given to women. The promotion of virtues of integrity, truthfulness, tolerance, service, mutual cooperation and good neighbourliness remain in-built in all HAPEN’s activities. In particular, tolerance is integrated through the establishment of multi-clan beneficiary projects.

Like in conflicts and conflict-stricken countries, such as Somalia are one of the major challenges experienced by its communities is the brain drain of its professional and the skilled people who leave the country in search of safety and opportunities for better living conditions elsewhere.
